Maja Ma, the first Amazon Prime original movie made in India, starring Madhuri Dixit, premiered this weekend. And that’s all I can say good about it - Madhuri is still super hot, looks and acting wise, but the rest of the cast (except a fiery Simone Singh - Ruksar from K3G (2001) - reeling off some great one liners) and the movie is a hot mess. It tries to straddle too many worlds (I won’t give out any spoilers) and address many things but comes across as fake as Rajit Kapoor and Sheeba Chaddha’s Indian American accents. Gajraj Rao who is usually brilliant is weighed down by a one note written character and a side effect which if it lasts more than 4 hours needs a doctor (look at the fine print of the little blue pill and its cousins on TV ads for further details 😄 ). The story goes to some absurd lengths in the most unsubtle ways and then ties it all up in a neat bow.
As an aside, Simone Singh’s family’s last name in the movie is Adhia - that’s got to be a first as far as I know. How I wish the movie had been worthy of such an illustrious surname!
